The book of Ezekiel identifies Babylon as the King of the North.
“For thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will bring upon Tyrus Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, a king of kings, from the north…”
Ezekiel 26:7
The following prophecies are from the book of Jeremiah, the central theme of which is God’s judgment upon Judah through the Babylonians. The writings of Jeremiah talk over and over about Babylon, referring to it as the kingdom from the north.
Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘Because you have not heard My words, behold, I will send and take all the families of the north,’ says the Lord, ‘and Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, My servant, and will bring them against this land, against its inhabitants, and against these nations all around…’
Jeremiah 25:8-9
Behold, I will send and take all the families of the north, saith the LORD, and Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant…”
Jeremiah 25:9
And the word of the Lord came unto me the second time, saying, What seest thou? And I said, I see a seething pot; and the face thereof is toward the north. Then the Lord said unto me, Out of the north an evil shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land. For, lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north, saith the Lord; and they shall come, and they shall set every one his throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all the walls thereof round about, and against all the cities of Judah.
Jeremiah 1:13–15
Set up the standard toward Zion: retire, stay not: or I will bring evil from the north, and a great destruction. . .Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots shall be as a whirlwind: his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe unto us! for we are spoiled.
Jeremiah 4:6,13
“O ye children of Benjamin, gather yourselves to flee out of the midst of Jerusalem… for evil appeareth out of the north, and great destruction.”
Jeremiah 6:1
“Behold, a people cometh from the north country, and a great nation shall be raised from the sides of the earth. They shall lay hold on bow and spear… they are cruel, and have no mercy…” Jeremiah 6:22–23
So, the King of the North, according to scripture seems to represent Babylon.
Isn’t Babylon an ancient civilization? Or is it a title carried down through time?
